The best way to prevent or manage a chronic illness is to control your risk factors. Generally anything that makes it more likely for you to acquire a chronic condition is a risk factor. Some risk factors for chronic conditions such as age and heredity cannot be controlled so it‘s important to do what we can to control the ones in our power to change.

The most common controllable risk factors for chronic diseases are well established and well known. They are linked to lifestyle choices that are within your own hands to change. These risk factors are:
- unhealthy diet and excessive weight
- lack of physical activity
- tobacco use
Although widespread and costly, many chronic diseases are also preventable. Eating nutritious foods, becoming more physically active and avoiding tobacco can help keep you from developing many of these diseases and conditions.
